Hello folks, it sure has been a while!

Almost a year, in fact.

I lowkey abandoned self-hosting projects in the latter half of 2024, the TrueNAS drama and the shit hardware kinda ruined my mood.

In the mean time, i have been playing a heck of a lot of Elden Ring (200 hours for my first playthrough, FromSoft games really bring out the completionist in me).

But…we are back! 🎉

I built a new, proper HomeLab machine, based on AMD Threadripper 3000, that can pretty much handle any workload i can throw at it (except AI, GPUs are expensive)

The specs are:

  • AMD Threadripper 3970X (32c/64t)
  • Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus PRO Wifi (not the coolest motherboard, but i got it as a bundle)
  • 128GB of 3200Mhz DDR4

The GPU of choice is still the little Tesla P4 that was in the old HomeLab, but it will get an upgrade when the time is right.

As for the software, I am using Proxmox as mentioned in my last few posts: no more gimmicky setups, just plain VMs like the Lord intended.

I still run a TrueNAS instance, but its virtualised in Proxmox: I bought an LSI HBA to give TrueNAS raw control over the spinning rust drives i have from the old system, and it works surprisingly seamlessly! TrueNAS seems none the wiser about being virtualised, once the PCIE HBA is passed through.

The only thing i am really missing is a GPU powerful enough to run ML workloads: I was thinking towards a used RTX 3090, as 4090s are still a little bit too expensive for my taste.

Ideally, I’d like to have both a local LLM server for programming/chat, and image/video generation with flux

Other interesting developments are on the horizon, such as Yue, a new frontier model for generating Sound and lyrics from text prompts.

So yeah: more content is (hopefully) on the way. I will share more progress as it becomes relevant.

See you out there, space cowboy!

PS: New Madoka movie and gacha game on the way, yay! Might write about either.
I will try the gacha, i am a fanboy after all, but usually gacha games bore me pretty quickly
